Art and mental health meet at the 'House of Emotions'.

In this edition of David Bade draws down Heerlen, we continue the cooperation with mental health care organisation Mondriaan, festival Cultura Nova and SCHUNCK Museum.

The 'House' is a pavilion on Cultura Nova's festival square. It was designed by visual artist David Bade. The pavilion displays works created by Mondriaan's clients. In his art practice, Bade has a lot of experience working with the mental health sector. Like no other, he knows how to enthuse and connect various groups of people.

Theatre and visual art provide a way to break taboos and share difficult subjects with each other and with the audience. Building and furnishing the pavilion together with Mondriaan clients is an example of how art can serve as a bridge between people.

The creation process

In June 2023, Bade will start working with Mondriaan staff and clients to create artworks and components for the pavilion. Participants may work in all art forms: visual art, music, dance, theatre, film, photography. Starting point is one or more emotions, then David Bade helps where necessary to portray this emotion.

During Cultura Nova 2023, the 'House' at festival location Burgemeester van Grunsvenplein will be accessible free of charge. Visitors will have the chance to participate in the creation process. Bade will be present throughout the festival to engage visitors and participants in creating new artworks and adding them to the growing pavilion.

The 'House of Emotions' will be open from Saturday 26 August to Sunday 3 September, during Cultura Nova's festival square opening hours.

David Bade draws Heerlen

David Bade and SCHUNCK have a lifelong collaboration. This means that throughout his life, Bade regularly returns to Heerlen to draw diverse Heerlen people in ever-changing settings and environments. These works are added to the municipal collection managed by SCHUNCK. This creates an image archive that records the DNA of Heerlen. Read more about 'David Bade draws down Heerlen' here.
