SCHUNCK starts building Art Depot

In 2023 the SCHUNCK Art Depot will open as an extension of the museum. The exhibition space will be enlarged with approximately half. This is done with a glass canopy over the patio. The Art Depot provides a space for the SCHUNCK collection, making it accessible to the general public.

The initiative means that the collection will now be accessible for permanent viewing in the heart of Heerlen. The collection can be seen by way of temperary themed presentations. By pressing a button, visitors will be able to reveal works presented on the racks, accompanied by the relevant information. The new Art Depot will also link the Glaspaleis and the school of music with the museum by means of a glass canopy. This covered space will be transformed into a full-blown presentation area - the SCHUNCK Atrium - and so increase the amount of museum space.

 Impressie: Wiel Arets Architects

Wiel Arets Architects came up with the design for the Art Depot and the glass canopy for the patio. On top of the glass roof are the words "Les extrèmes se touchent". The text is a tribute to Nic. Tummers (Heerlen, 1928-2020), honorary citizen of the city.

The work will start at the end of September, when the exhibition Keith Haring: Grace House Mural has ended. The official opening will follow in 2023.

The realization of the SCHUNCK Art Depot and the Atrium is made possible by the Municipality of Heerlen, VriendenLoterij, VSB Fund, Dioraphte Foundation and Wiel Arets Architects.
