Nic Tummers Atrium

Jacobs Dream by Nic. Tummers on view for only two more weeks

In the Atrium you can see through 10 March 10 the exhibition 'Jacobs Dream', which shows one of Nic. Tummers' ideas and dreams for Heerlen.

Our new exhibition space, the Atrium, is worth a visit not only for its beautiful, bright glass-filled room, which is used as an additional space for museum presentations. But also because of what there is to see. For example, now, just two weeks away, you can see the exhibition Jacobs Dream by Nic. Tummers. Tummers was a visual artist and architecture critic who was known as an ardent supporter of 'socio-space', space that brings visual art, architecture and urban planning together in the midst of society.

The exhibition features a sculpture from 1957. The first sculpture with which the sculptor stepped into the city. Nic. makes an interpretation of the Biblical story Jacob's Dream: Jacob rests his head on a stone with which cities are built. Nic. proposed to place this statue nine meters high in the view of the mayor's office in the new space there that he called Stadhuisplaza, as a symbol of hope for the future of Heerlen. However, the sculpture remained 1.35 meters high, and - when not on display - is in the home of daughter Tamira. In the Atrium you can see a life-size version of Tummers' Ladder against the Moon, produced especially for the exhibition, alongside his own sculpture (photo), various sketches and additional documentation.

The Atrium is accessible with a museum ticket. Jacobs Dream is still on view through 10 March.
