Happy holidays from SCHUNCK and David Bade

The holidays are approaching and 2024 is already looming. A year we are eagerly looking forward to; after all, there are many wonderful things in store.

Fully in line with the current exhibition In for life: 10 years of David Bade in Heerlen, we asked David Bade to draw up an appropriate Christmas message. Here, the artist focuses on the typical Heerlen mentality: forward. Even in difficult times.

David Bade: "The brass band figure carries SCHUNCK as a drum on his chest and thus beats the rhythm for art and culture in Heerlen. The Christmas tree in his hand is sober, for it is not appropriate in these times to display our wealth and exuberance. But there is also a positive sound. In the peak of the tree, the page is turned from 2023 to 2024, while the Christmas woman on the building waves the white flag. After all, peace on earth is the ultimate Christmas spirit, isn't it?"

Arts and culture are carried by many

Oil lamps dangle in the store window, bringing light and at the same time a reference to the mines, which are inextricably linked to Heerlen. Bade continues: "The multi-legged figure symbolizes the fact that art and culture are carried by many. But at the same time I want this sculpture to radiate the firmness of carrying on. Bravely forward! That really suits Heerlen, its people and its history, which has been marked by ups and downs. Despite the hard times, globally and locally, I think the people of Heerlen are very elastic and flexible. I therefore wish them not only to look back, but above all to move forward. It is okay to take risks that have not been calculated - that too is very typical of Heerlen. Daring things, taking uncertain steps into the future and jumping into the deep end. So I would say: follow the fanfarmer, look ahead but also take a moment to reflect on our existence. Because that too is art."
