Frictions Festival gets recap edition at SCHUNCK

On 26 April, Frictions Festival returns at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis. During this special edition, SCHUNCK looks back on the past four editions. All collaborating parties will come together for an evening of music, readings, performances and film.

Frictions is a festival formula in which SCHUNCK invites a different cultural party from Heerlen or the region each time to curate a unique event in and around the Glaspaleis. It is a celebration of diversity, creativity and connection, where SCHUNCK lets the voice of local creatives be heard. Also on 26 April, Frictions offers an evening of music, performances and other (audio)visual spectacle. Literature platform PANDA, lhbti+ organisation Queer Parkstad, the youngsters of Outpoet and hip-hop platform Kool Cult join forces for a one-night-only edition of Frictions Festival.

Music

The evening will be enlivened by a mix of musical talent. Outpoet, in collaboration with the Raising Grounds foundation, presents Hence The Bravery, a band that broke through in the monotonous days of pandemic lockdowns. They mix pop-punk, grunge and other alternative genres to inspire young people to enjoy solid music. Visitors can enjoy Hence The Bravery at SCHUNCK's (almost brand new) Atrium. Dj phenomenon DJ Dreyaz will bring the evening together with a musical summary of the past four editions of Frictions.

Poetry and film

Het Belangrijke Genootschap, PANDA's talent group for young creators, shares their work in readings with the audience on the first floor of the Glaspaleis. Audience favourite The Crying Scarf also makes a comeback. Also on this floor, in collaboration with Queer Parkstad, a film screening of the documentary Verstoten - directed by Claire Slingerland - will take place. The documentary tells the story of homeless rainbow youth in the Netherlands.

Skate jam

Skate collective Loose Ankles returns for a residency with a new disaster. This time they will show off their skills in front of the St Pancratius Church. Frictions X Kool Cult photos taken by photographer and skater Miko are on display at the Glaspaleis.

New exhibitions and performance

During Frictions Recap, four new exhibitions will be open at SCHUNCK. There is new work by Lizzie Veldkamp as part of Dreaming Out Loud on the first floor, a new selection of artworks in the art depot chosen by Nancy Nijsten on behalf of aid group 'Een hart voor een ander' and the work Shuttlecock by Jean Tinguely in the Atrium. Also opening is the special two-part exhibition by Ukrainian artist Alevtina Kakhidze. In the store window of SCHUNCK Glaspaleis, she presents 'Windows, signs of peace', and in the St Pancratius Church she shows work by 14 other artists from Ukraine under the title 'What hinders a sermon becomes one'. The evening will end with a performance by Alevtina Kakhidze in and around the showcase.
