The architects collective Selvatico, one of the winners of Heerlen Rooftop Project’s ideas competition (2019), completed the garden design. With this inspirational design, which goes by the name of ‘The Countryside’, Selvatico and SCHUNCK are aiming to provide a concrete answer to one of the most complex and pressing issues for the future: our climate!
The garden has been installed in phases by volunteers and local Heerlen residents. Necessary carpentry was carried out during the first phase, followed by planting in the following two phases. Slowly but surely, the garden has been taking shape. The rooftop garden will be opened to the public on 2 July. Activities will include a Rooftop bar, yoga sessions are planned and there is a kids programme complete with face-painting and craft activities. The roof garden will be open at weekends from midday to 8:00 p.m. from July onwards.
festive opening
The opening of the rooftop garden will take place on 30 June 2022, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Accompanied by an (alcohol-free) drink and a live jazz combo, we will raise a glass to mark the start of Phase 2 of this ambitious project in the company, amongst others, of René Seijben (Expojaar Manager at IBA Parkstad) and Roel Wever (Mayor of Heerlen). This will be followed by drinks and live music.
Beforehand, at 3:00 p.m. there will be a special session in SCHUNCK for architecture professionals, with an open call from Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industrie: Bouwen vanuit de Bodem (‘Building from the bottom up’), including two inspirational presentations by Peter Veenstra (LOLA Landscape Architects) and Selvatico (designers of Rooftop Heerlen).
Future (P)roof
In this exhibition, architects’ collective and rooftop garden designer Selvatico will be presenting its vision on the unharnessed potential of roofs in Future (P)roof. The exhibition highlights major ecological problems, but also local, natural solutions. This will be on show in SCHUNCK Glaspaleis, level +1, from 1 July onwards (free admission).
