Existing structures and infrastructures have a capacity to support new uses. Architects can help activate this capacity but need specific skills. Reading the existing situation, adding and subtracting judiciously, tailoring and tuning the relation of the found and the new: these all call on the architect‘s judgement, accumulated over time and exercised personally through drawings and words. William Mann will discuss their responses to a number of second-hand situations - a ruined castle, an urban river, a narrow passageway between two colleges - to demonstrate their philosophy of first-hand engagement.

William Mann is a director of Witherford Watson Mann Architects, London, established in 2001. The firm’s transformation of the medieval Astley Castle won the 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize for its distinctive entwining of past and present. William Mann studied architecture at the University of Cambridge and Harvard, graduating in 1991. After working on archaeological sites in Rome and Egypt, he gained professional experience in London and Flanders, including at Tim Ronalds Architects and Robbrecht en Daem Architecten. William has written on London’s edge landscapes, social engineering, self-build, buildings’ nicknames, and the hybrid urbanism of Flanders for Archis, Oase and other magazines, as well as contributing chapters to several books on the relation between urban regeneration and social change. He was visiting professor at the Royal Academy  of Fine Arts, Copenhagen in 2014.
