In essence, the physical quest of Chaim van Luit is the work of art itself. He collects unusual traces of human, and sometimes animal, actions. He does this by exploring the forests of the German Eifel, the marlstone caves in Limburg, and cities and fi elds throughout Europe, often over a period of several years. This has led to finds such as a mineral lick, used by red deer, and rare melteddown Roman attributes. It has also resulted in these traces, signs or sayings being reinterpreted in the form of neon installations, paintings or sculptures. In Van Luit’s sensitivity for traces and texts, and his unconstrained manner of exploration, his background in graffi ti is clearl palpable. Van Luit will be presenting a new installation in the store window in the Glaspaleis. Partly as a result of his roots in Heerlen, he works using traces from its mining past and present.

Chaim van Luit was born in Heerlen in 1985. He graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2011. From 2013 to 2015, he was artist in residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. In the past Chaim has held solo exhibitions, for example in Kasteel Wijlre, Wijlre (2020, NL), Meessen de Clercq, Brussels (2022, 2018, B), P////////AKT, Amsterdam (2014, NL) and Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (2013, NL). As well as a number of works held in the SCHUNCK collection, Van Luit’s art is represented in public and private collections at home and abroad.
