Library for (young) kids

Did you know that young children have a special talent for learning language? In their early years, their brains develop the basics. A good foundation in language, helps in school. Language proficient children know more words, can express themselves better and are more confident.

Being actively engaged in language can be a lot of fun. But how do you go about it?

  • Talk to your child in your native language. For example, when you change a diaper or tell out loud what you are buying when you go shopping together.
  • Sing simple songs. Because of the melody, songs are easy to remember. Before you know it, your child will be singing along.
  • Read aloud. You can do this anytime, anywhere. But it helps by creating a set ritual for this, such as at night before bed.

But. What if you're not very good at reading aloud yourself? Or what if you want to help your child learn Dutch? Then we are happy to help you and your family. Come to a SCHUNCK Library near you. Children can borrow books for free and we organize lots of activities. We welcome you to discover together how we can give your child a good start with language.

Books and more

  • We recently added a collection of Ukrainian childern's books.
  • Like to read or listen to some children's books online? The readingcorner has books in Dutch, English, Moroccan, Syrian, Turkish and Polish!

Reading Hours

Want to get out and about with your baby, toddler or preschooler? And does your child enjoy listening to stories? Then come to a reading hour in one of the SCHUNCK libraries. Every week we read from a picture book, for example Dikkie Dik or Gonnie and Gijsje. Or maybe your child has a request? This is all possible! Sitting still is really not necessary. Together we make it a fun morning.

Ask Sjpruut

We have lots of fun ways to engage with language! Just drop in at 'Ask Sjpruut'. There we will gladly help you on your way. For example: which books are suitable for your child? And: how do you do that, talking to a baby that doesn't talk back yet? Come to the library with your child and exchange tips with other moms and dads. Coffee and tea are ready!
